how can i know the space that i'm using

I want to know the space that i'm using in the debian server. The FTP don't give me this information when I connect.

Other question. When I do a FTP, there is two folders. One is called "private" and the other "public_html". I know that "public_html" is for store my web, but ¿What's the reason of the folder "private"?

Private is obviously the folder that you put files that you don't want other people to access.

For the space you use log-in here using your username and password:

I don't know if i'm doing anything wrong, because I can't see the space that i'm using.

In "account admin" I click on "linux/Debian" and I put my login and my password. Then I go to a page called "webmin 1.030 debian.polarhome.com", but I only can click on a link called "plan file", and in these place I can't see what I want.

I'm sure that I am doing anything wrong. ¿Can you help me?

You should select Others from the menu on the top and then quotas.
I don't know if something is wrong with Debian but in RedHat it works fine.

I have another question about the size of the database. I suppose that the 20 MB of space that Polarhome brings me is for the archives of my web and for the database. ¿Can you confirm this? ¿the space of the database is different of the space on the web?

5mb mail
5mb MySQL DB

Ok. Then te space of Mysql is different of the webspace. I think that Mysqul and webspace peers the 20MB. Ok. I think that 5 MB of database can be right for my porpouses.

i went to the 'Disk Quotas' section of the Usermin thing, but it's kind of confusing. Can someone explain to me what means what? e.g. which one's the database space, and which is the web space. Also, what's the difference between the '/var' and the '/home'? thanks in advance

the 'quotas' thing is pretty easy to understand, you have your total allowed bytes [look for 20000] and total use [can't predict that ]

you can view how much your mysql db is taking in phpmyadmin, and the difference between /home and /var is;
/home is the place where you put your files, /var is where the email is stored

that's great, thanks. one more question, what's the difference between the 'Blocks' and 'Files', and the 'Soft Limit' and 'Hard Limit'? (btw this is in teh Disk Quotas section of Usermin).

Blocks, are where files are stored.
like a closet for clothes.

Soft limit is your quota before the kernel starts deleting files.
ie if you reach your soft limit today, and not delete overlapping files, tomorrow the kernel will step in and clean up your home folder.

hard limit is when the kernel just says 'bugger off, you ain't writing anything else!' and just locks you out of writing to the drive, the only thing to do when you reach that is to start deleting stuff.

That's on linux atleast, on freebsd when you reach the quota, that li'l devil stabs you in the eye and kills your kids.
